Dental implants are an excellent solution for those who are missing one or more teeth. Cosmetically the result of a successful dental implant is almost unbeatable. A dental implant will function just like a regular tooth, and in appearance will be very hard to detect.

How a dental implant works

A dental implant replaces the root of a tooth with a metal screw-like insert placed in your jawbone. This insert will bond with your jawbone and provide a solid foundation for a replacement tooth (crown). The replacement tooth is specifically made to match your existing teeth.

How Bad is the Surgery?

Dental implant surgery is a well-established practice and recovery is usually complete and successful. You may experience some of the typical discomforts associated with any type of dental surgery. You can view our Post Operative Care page for more details on what to expect.

Bone Grafting

In some cases, a bone graft may be needed to get the best outcome from a dental implant procedure. This can be the case when there is not enough natural bone available for a dental implant to be secured. Bone grafting in the mouth is a routine procedure and is usually very successful. After a period of time the grafted bone material will bond with your jawbone and create new bone that provides a stable foundation for your dental implant.

Healing and Integration

After the initial surgery, you should expect some pain and swelling for 5-7 days and you may need to eat soft foods while the site completes healing.

Dental implants generally take 3 months or more to integrate into the mouth before the final restoration is completed with a dentist or dental specialist.

Consultation

The most important determinant of successful implant treatment is planning. This involves a clinical examination and x-rays. A 3D CT Scan, dental models and a trial wax-up of the final result may be required to ensure optimum aesthetics and a perfect occlusion.

Implant Programme for Dentists

Dr Thyne runs continuing training programmes supported by study group meetings for his referring implant dentists. This helps to maintain the highest possible standard of patient care and ensures the best result for patients.
